Novelists Inc. Conference 2013

{BLOG_TITLE} – I attended the Novelists Inc. conference #ninc13 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in October 2013. I sat in on a number of presentations on the industry and the craft of writing and selling books.

First was Raising the Bar – New Opportunities to Explore Something New and Different. This was discussion panel with several industry pros taking questions from the audience. Key points – media is ever evolving. If you have a series of books consider novellas in between books to keep readers engaged. Also consider pop casts, video games etc. to tie into your story. Publish in as many formats as possible ie: print, ebook and audio.

Next was How to Keep the Focus on Writing – Key points – put the writing first!!!! Your job is to show up, brilliance is optional. Hire someone, if possible, to do the things you don’t like such as social media or writing a newsletter. Use proof readers. Use the correct categories to list your books at Amazon.

A very interesting talk from J. Kenner on websites and social media. Tips – always have an easily visible and clickable link to your book. A newsletter is a great way to keep readers engaged.

Mark Leslie Lefebvre from Kobo gave a great talk titled The Secret of Success at KOBO (he’s a very entertaining speaker). Key point – a great cover is essential. Whether the reader needs to pick it out in a see of thumbnails on a webpage or on a book store shelf the cover has to stand out! So hire me to make that happen 😉. He also emphasized using the correct categories to list your book. You don’t want it showing up in dozens of categories – it gets lost that way. You want to be as specific as possible ie: romance, single woman, cowboy.

I sat with mystery writer Maggie Sefton for supper one night. She is a lovely lady and very passionate about mystery writing. She really loves what she does! I also met the super friendly Cheryl Holt having a drink in the lounge. I am happy to say, not only is she very nice but a great writer too. I hadn’t read a great romance in a long time but picked up one of hers and had a hard time putting it down. Highly recommend!

Banquet night I briefly met Carrie Ryan and Diana Peterfreund. Another two lovely young ladies who were very friendly.

The only bad point to the conference was the cold snap Myrtle Beach had while we were there :(. But it’s a beautiful spot and I would definitely return in the summer. I came home from the conference re-energized for writing and design services. I would highly recommend Novelists Inc. for published writers.

The Electric Church by Jeff Somers

I am now on book 3 of this series and thought I’d do a quick review.

In the Electic Church our anti-hero Avery Cates, who is a bad person with good intentions, is hired (not that he can refuse) to kill someone. This is what he does for a living but this target is a little different. The contract is on Dennis Squalor, leader of the Electric Church, a church where the followers are converted to cyborgs. Avery assembles a team of highly efficient and strange criminals and takes on the job. No spoilers here but this is a great romp, lots of gritty violence and bad language. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

In The Digital Plague Avery faces a new challenge. He’s rich as all hell from his last job, but that doesn’t help him when everyone around him starts to die. A designer plague spread by microscopic machines, brilliant and deadly. Avery is in a race against time to stop the plague. Another great adventure. The only negative I can find in this book is how much punishment Avery can take and still keep fighting. Most heroes would have died 10 times over during this bloody romp. Still, a very gripping story.

And on to The Eternal Prison. After surviving the plague Avery finds himself in a prison in the middle of the desert, survival rate zero. This book alternates between his time in the prison and the jobs he takes on once he’s out. So we know he gets out somehow. I’m only about half way through this one but I must say it is typical Avery style adventure. Although, so far anyway, he isn’t getting beat up quite as much! Another enjoyable read.
